Leave No Trace Principles

The Leave No Trace principles are a set of guidelines designed to promote responsible outdoor ethics and minimize the impact of human activities on natural environments. These principles are crucial for preserving the integrity of ecosystems and ensuring that outdoor spaces remain pristine for future generations. The seven Leave No Trace principles are:

1. Plan Ahead and Prepare:
   • Research and plan your trip to minimize environmental impact.
   • Be aware of regulations and special concerns for the area you are visiting.
   • Prepare for unpredictable weather, and bring appropriate gear and supplies.
2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces:
   • Stick to established trails and campsites to avoid damaging fragile ecosystems.
   • Walk single file in the middle of the trail, even when wet or muddy, to minimize trail widening.
   • Camp at least 200 feet away from lakes and streams to protect riparian areas.
3. Dispose of Waste Properly:
   • Pack out all trash, leftover food, and litter.
   • Dispose of human waste in a “cathole” dug 6 to 8 inches deep, at least 200 feet away from water, trails, and campsites.
   • Pack out used toilet paper and hygiene products in a sealed bag.
4. Leave What You Find:
   • Leave natural and cultural features as you found them.
   • Do not disturb wildlife or their habitats; observe from a distance.
   • Avoid marking or carving into trees, rocks, or structures.
5. Minimize Campfire Impact:
   • Use a camp stove for cooking to minimize the impact of fire on the environment.
   • If campfires are permitted, use established fire rings and keep fires small.
   • Burn only small sticks and twigs found on the ground; do not break branches from live trees.
6. Respect Wildlife:
   • Observe wildlife from a distance and do not approach or feed them.
   • Store food securely to avoid attracting animals to campsites.
   • Keep pets under control and on a leash to prevent them from disturbing wildlife.
7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors:
   • Yield to other hikers on the trail and maintain a quiet and unobtrusive presence.
   • Keep noise levels down, especially in areas with wildlife.
   • Respect the privacy and tranquility of others enjoying the outdoors.

By adhering to these Leave No Trace principles, outdoor enthusiasts can contribute to the preservation of natural spaces and ensure that the beauty of the wilderness remains intact for future generations.
